MPANZ Statement on Gas Energy Policy

Master Plumbers Australia/New Zealand (MPANZ) strongly believes that individuals in leadership roles, including federal MPs, should avoid conflating natural gas with less environmentally friendly fossil fuels.

Gas stands out as one of the cleanest forms of energy available today, essential for keeping the lights on and ensuring that Australians remain nourished, warm, and safe in their homes.

Recent discussions regarding the Greens’ and Teal independents on gas policy, which proposes terminating gas-fired power generation within five years in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, have raised significant concerns. This initiative threatens to disrupt the Federal Government’s strategy to accelerate the transition to renewables while maintaining a stable energy supply.

A report commissioned by Australian Energy Producers has warned that halting investment in gas could jeopardise electricity supply in eastern states within two years, potentially leading to a “major economic disruption.” Additionally, if the government opts to ban gas development amid pressure from the Greens and other independent members, the ramifications could extend beyond energy production, affecting compliance with international LNG contracts and risking manufacturing job losses.

Gas peaking plants provide backup power when renewable sources cannot meet demand. Preserving these assets is essential as we move towards net-zero emissions without sacrificing energy reliability.

Nathaniel Smith, MPANZ spokesman on gas, stated, “Natural gas is not just an energy source; it is a vital component of our security and prosperity. To jeopardise our gas infrastructure is to jeopardise our economic future.” Mr Smith emphasised, “We must adopt a balanced approach that integrates natural gas as we transition to renewable energy sources, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for all Australians.

Samantha McCulloch, CEO of Australian Energy Producers, highlighted the urgency of this issue, stating that the Greens’ gas policy could result in “lights out for Australia,” undermining progress toward a sustainable future.

MPANZ calls for informed dialogue that recognises natural gas’s vital role in our energy landscape and urges all leaders to champion policies that promote energy security while advancing towards cleaner alternatives.
